Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest project Phantom Thread has enjoyed a successful run thus far, receiving nominations for six Oscars, two Golden Globes, and winning a BAFTA Film Award for costume design. However, not everyone is a fan of the period piece.
Conflicting opinions about movies are never a bad thing and in fact are encouraged more often than not, however, to be validated in one’s claim they should at least have sat through the entire film. This was not the case for Jennifer Lawrence, who recently admitted to shutting off Thread after only three minutes.
“I got through about three minutes of it. I put in a good solid three. I’m sorry to anybody who loved that movie.”
According to Indiewire, she made these comments during an appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast promoting her new film Red Sparrow, and she didn’t stop just there.
“Is it just about clothes?” she continued. “Is [Reynolds Woodcock] kind of like a narcissistic sociopath and he’s an artist so every girl falls in love him because he makes her feel bad about herself and that’s the love story? I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know. I’ve been down that road, I know what that’s like, I don’t need to watch that movie [laughs].”
Lawrence has built a loyal fan base around her outspokenness and quirky attitude, even making headlines last week about her crush on Call Me by Your Name’s Timothée Chalamet. Fans relate to her unfiltered persona, but she might’ve gone a stretch too far on her Thread comments. Her opinion is her own and she holds the right to stand by it, but she should probably at least watch the whole film first – she may be pleasantly surprised to see it’s about a woman controlling said ‘artist.’
Red Sparrow hits theaters nationwide this Friday, March 2nd. PTA probably won’t be rushing to the box office for this one.
