Jennifer Lawrence And Malala Yousafazi Produced Apple Doc About Afghan Women ‘Bread & Roses’ Drops Trailer

Apple Original Films has just released the trailer for Bread & Roses, a documentary feature directed by Sahra Mani and produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Malala Yousafazi.

Bread & Roses is about the plight of women in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 2021 withdrawal from the country of the United States and the fall of Kabul to the Taliban.

The film follows three courageous Afghani women as they resist efforts to rob them of the autonomy they had only just acquired in recent decades. Lawrence and her Excellent Cadaver producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi initiated and hired Afghan filmmaker Mani (A Thousand Girls Like Me) to direct.

Yousafzai, the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize-winning champion of girls education, signed on as an executive producer to further highlight the film’s urgent message, joined by the Iranian composer Farhad Khosravi.

Bread & Roses had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it garnered strong reviews. It is currently at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and will begin streaming on Apple TV+ on Nov. 22.

Lawrence and Ciarrocchi are also executive producers of another 2024 documentary feature about women’s rights: Zurawski v. Texas. Directed by Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, with Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton as executive producers as well. The film, which chronicles the devastating effects that the overturning of Roe v. Wade has already had on numerous women, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and will open in select theaters before the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election.
