Robert De Niro’s passion project is finally coming to fruition, with Taylor Hackford (Ray) directing, and now Jennifer Aniston on board to star alongside the screen icon.
De Niro, who has played a stand-up comedian once before in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy (twice if you include Raging Bull), has long wanted this project to happen. Art Linson and comic Jeffrey Ross wrote the script which follows an insult comedian (De Niro) who develops a close relationship with Aniston’s character.
Ross is best known for his work on Comedy Central Roasts, while Linson has written a De Niro-starring film in the past with What Just Happened? Linson will also produce the film along with his son, John. De Niro can be currently seen in theaters in the sleeper hit The Intern co-starring Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) as well as the just opened thriller Heist. The two-time Oscar-winning actor will next appear on screens in David O. Russell’s Joy opposite Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. De Niro appears in Russell’s American Hustle (2013) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012)- earning an Oscar nomination for the latter.
Aniston last appeared in the indie She’s Funny That Way directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Last year, Aniston received Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominated for her leading performance in the indie Cake.
The Comedian will begin principle photography in New York next year.
