A new face will be appearing in the Divergent franchise’s final chapter, Allegiant, as Jeff Daniels (HBO’s The Newsroom) has been brought on board to play David, the head of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Allegiant is the final book in the trilogy by Veronica Roth and will be split into two films, with Allegiant: Part 1 coming in March of 2016.
The Divergent series follows the story of Tris, played by Shailene Woodley (The Fault In Our Stars), who doesn’t fit into the system of individual factions and is therefore ‘Divergent.’ Persecuted for her differences, Tris becomes part of a revolution. With the exit of Kate Winslet (Finding Neverland) from the series after her role in last year’s Insurgent, Jeff Daniels will be stepping in as the new villain. With the breakdown of the faction system in the last film, the inhabitants will now look to the giant fence and what lays beyond. The answer is the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, where Tris and Four – played by Theo James (Underworld: Awakening) – will discover why they were all put behind a fence in the first place.
Daniels is perhaps best known for his comedic roles in films such as Dumb and Dumber (1994), but the actor’s upcoming projects show he has a broad range. On top of playing David, Daniels is also involved in the biopic Steve Jobs, where he will be playing John Sculley, former Apple CEO. He’ll also star alongside Matt Damon in Ridley Scott’s The Martian. With more serious roles like these, and experience playing the heavy in Rian Johnson‘s Looper (2012), Daniels should have no problem stepping into his role in Allegiant.
