The upcoming Man of Steel sequel may have a new cast member. Jason Momoa, formerly of Game of Thrones, and star of the recent Conan the Barbarian update, appears in early negotiations to join the cast of the hotly anticipated and rumor-frenzied outing that will be the cinematic unveiling of comic book idols Wonder Woman and Batman in the same feature film.
Who exactly Momoa is set to play is unconfirmed, as Warner Bros., the distributor of the film and proprietor of the DC Comics canon had no comment, but sources close the film report that the actor is set to star opposite Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne/Batman in the still-untitled film, which will again be directed by Zack Synder. Speculations looms that Momoa may be up for the villain role of Doomsday, who famously once “killed” Superman in the comics, a character whose appearance is teased within extras of the Man of Steel Blu-Ray, and the Martian Manhunter is another character that’s suddenly running the rumor mill in conjunction with Momoa’s name. However, there is no confirmation from representatives the tightly lipped project, and certainly there wouldn’t be any official word at least until Momoa’s participation is confirmed.
Rumors persist that the Superman vs. Batman showdown may include (at a minimum) cameos from a great many DC superheroes in the hopes for Warner to brand their comic canon in similar fashion to the way that Marvel Comics has successfully done in recent years. Israeli actress Gal Gadot was confirmed as Wonder Woman in the film just last week, a major coup considering that character has for years now been a hot property for film adaptation to no avail; The Avengers director Joss Wheden famously tried to get a film series going for Wonder Woman for year before it was unceremoniously dropped by the studio. Momoa’s casting, if it comes to fruition, looks shockingly similar to Chris Hemsworth’s as Thor a few years ago. Like Hemsworth at the time, Momoa’s credits consist of regular TV work and appearances in a few feature films, and like Hemsworth, he has the physique to easily fill out a comic book-style figure.
The otherworldly expectations of the film will undoubtedly go through the speculation gamut in the press until July 17, 2015, the day the film is set to release theatrically.
