It’s no surprise that with the superhero genre being so expansive and popular today, other studios are doing their best to create more unique and original superhero films on the market. Now, Warner Bros has a new film in the work tackling a different idea when it comes to superhero that is based on a recent novel by Gus Krieger known as Superworld. The film adaptation now has Arrested Development and Ozark star Jason Bateman set to direct the upcoming superhero movie.
The novel takes place in an alternate world where everyone has superpowers. Everyone except for one man named Ignatius Lohman. Lohman works an average life working a white-collar job in a sea of superheroes while his father is the leader of well known defense organization Peerless. Lohman is faced with a challenge when must face off against a corporate overlord who has the power to neutralize anyone with super powers.
Bateman is teaming up again with Game Night writer Mark Perez who is set to write the script for the project while Bateman directs. Jason Bateman will also be producer on the project through his Aggregate Film banner with David Kanter and Jeff Okin also producing.
This will be Jason Bateman’s third film he has directed as he previous directed Bad Words and The Family Fang. This project definitely feels more high concept compared to his previous works but considering that the film’s tone is meant to be more comedic, Bateman certainly seems like a good choice to tackle on a very unique concept for a superhero film. Between Superworld and another project that Bateman is in talks to direct, Here Comes the Flood, it’s clear that Bateman is planning to showcase more of his promising directing talent in the upcoming years.
