Jane Schoenbrun Blends Genres In Next Film ‘Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma’

Acclaimed director Jane Schoenbrun of the celebrated 2024 film I Saw the TV Glow discussed their upcoming film in a recent Q&A. Schoenbrun described their next project entitled Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma as a combination of Portrait of a Lady on Fire and a Friday the 13th sequel.

The bold genre-blending move is inspired by Schoenbrun’s sexual awakening. They draw upon the sapphic romanticism of Céline Sciamma’s 2019 Cannes Best Screenplay and Queer Palm winner Portrait of Lady on Fire. In the film, Sciamma meditated on the relationship between an artist and the woman she was hired to paint. The delicate period piece set in the 18th century earned a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Contrast that with the slasher film Friday the 13th where notorious Jason Voorhees terrorizes young people at a summer camp. This franchise of twelve different movies is in the fast-paced horror genre. The Hollywood Reporter once described the 1980 film as “a sick and sickening low-budget feature.” The original has a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.

MovieWeb reported that Schoenbrun’s film is still in the development stages. In an interview with The New Yorker, Schoenbrun described it as “two women descend into frenzy of psychosexual mania.” Schoenbrun plans to include the exploration of the sex and sexuality of trans people. In an interview with Gregg Araki for Filmmaker Magazine, they stated: “It’s funny, my next movie is all about sex—essentially a movie about learning to enjoy sex after transition.”
