Jamie Dornan Hid From Controversy Surrounding His Role In ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Jamie Dornan, speaking on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs, revealed that he and his spouse retreated from public view to shield themselves from the criticisms during the release of Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015. Despite the film’s success, a brutal reaction towards Dornan left him questioning his role in the franchise.

Fifty Shades of Grey delves into the complex relationship between Anastasia “Ana” Steele, portrayed by Dakota Johnson, and the affluent Christian Grey, played by Dornan. The latter initiates violent sexual encounters, the graphic detail of which is almost unheard-of in modern cinema.

Reflecting on the initial film, Dornan admitted, “I felt like I had to withdraw. I was transitioning from receiving career-transforming acclaim for The Fall to facing near-ridicule.” As a result, Dornan sought refuge in the country home of the film’s director, away from all the media attention.

Despite these challenges, Dornan continued with two more films in the franchise. “The success [of the film] ensured the immediate greenlighting of sequels. It was surreal because, amidst the ridicule, I was contractually obligated to do two more, fully aware that further criticism lay ahead.”

Nevertheless, Dornan’s subsequent performances in Belfast and The Tourist garnered acclaim. Despite constant reminders of Fifty Shades’ shortcomings, he stands by his decision to be a part of the polarizing series.
