Finding themselves in a competitive bidding, New Line swept in to acquire the movie rights to The Boy Who Drew Monsters, a horror novel by Keith Donohue. The project is set to be produced by horror maestro James Wan.
The Boy Who Drew Monsters focuses on the story of a young boy who suffers from Asperger’s and agoraphobia. The boy eventually discovers that whatever he draws – which happens to primarily be monsters – comes to life. His best friend and parents try to help him through the ordeal along with a priest’s housekeeper. The book was published in 2014 by Picador publishing. Donuhue first found success with is 2006 novel, The Stolen Child.
Wan, who rose to fame in the horror genre, is currently working on The Conjuring 2. Most recently, he helmed Furious 7 and was hired to direct the DC Universe movie Aquaman.
Ian Goldberg (TV’s Once Upon Time) and Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) have singed on to write the script. Wan will produce the project with Michael Clear, who heads his production company Atomic Monster. Part of his deal with New Line sees him returning to direct The Conjuring 2. Richard Brener, Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter will oversee the project for New Line.
No director or actors have been linked to the project as of yet nor has a production schedule been announced. We will report back as soon as new information is available.
