James McAvoy has joined the cast of the spy thriller, The Coldest City, joining Charlize Theron.
The British actor, who recently signed up to join an upcoming untitled M. Night Shyamalan project – replacing Joaquin Phoenix – joins the adaptation of Antony Johnston’s graphic novel. So far, Theron and McAvoy are the only two actors cast in the film.
The film will take place in Germany on the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall, where an MI6 officer turns up dead. Charlize Theron will portray Lorrain Broughton, the spy charged with finding the log of spies the dead officer was trying to smuggle. Details of McAvoy’s role have not yet been revealed.
McAvoy can next be seen in the upcoming Victor Frankenstein alongside Daniel Radcliffe. He’s also reprising his role as Professor X in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
The project, penned by Kurt Johnstad, will be helmed by John Wick director David Leitch, who turned down John Wick 2 to work on this film. Focus Features acquired the film earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, and it’s slated to start shooting next month in Berlin and Budapest.
The Coldest City will hit cinemas some time next year.
