STXfilms recently acquired distribution rights for an English-language remake of Christian Carion’s French thriller, My Son. Carion will return to direct the remake of the 2019 film, with Split actor James McAvoy and First Man’s Claire Foy playing the lead roles.
The story of the film centers around a man who travels to the town where his ex-wife lives in search of answers when his only son goes missing. To play a character whose life is clouded in mystery, McAvoy will not be given a script or any dialogue to help him play the role. He’ll be aware of the basic aspects of the plot, and he’ll have to improvise and adapt to the story as it unfolds.
The original film was directed in the same way, with the lead improvising his role. The rest of the cast and crew will be aware of the more specific details of the plot.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Christian to create My Son for worldwide audiences,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of STXfilms Motion Picture Group. “James will be doing the detective work of the film in real time, on camera, to create real tension for this thriller. We like to support bold and innovative storytelling like My Son, and Claire could not be a more spectacular or exciting choice for this film which is certain to thrill audiences.”
