Emma Mackey is set to star in an upcoming Romantic comedy called Ella McCay, produced by 20th Century Studios. The new trailer and poster were released on October 21st. The comedy will be written, directed, and produced by Academy Award winner James L. Brooks. The film is set for domestic theatrical release on December 12, 2025.
The trailer begins with Mackey as the titular Ella McCay, portraying an idealistic young woman who strives to balance her professional life along with her personal life, all while navigating her chaotic and at times quirky family. The trailer underlines comedic interactions, work obstacles, and multiple romantic experiences, mixing humor with emotional moments. The supporting cast is led by Jamie Lee Curtis alongside Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Julie Kavner, Rebecca Hall, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks, Albert Brooks, and Woody Harrelson. The film is set in the present day; however, the tone draws heavy inspiration from 1940s and 1950s comedies, setting the film up to capture the wit of the past era while exploring modern human experiences.
Brooks described the project to be a tribute to the golden age of comedy films, stating that the biggest challenge regarding the film was to maintain the era’s eccentric spirit while portraying the day-to-day challenges of life and relationships, specifically women’s experiences in the 21st century. Brooks has praised the cast for bringing Ella’s story to life and delivering performances that went beyond his expectations.
