Director James Gunn’s latest and perhaps final installment of the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has been the topic of much discussion and anticipation. The film has already brought in $17.5 million in the previous alone; therefore, it’s expected to perform well on its release day today, May 5th. Based on afternoon showings, the film has already achieved $47 million to $48 million at 4,450 theaters.
Despite The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s ability to maintain its spot at the top of the charts for about four weeks, many expect Guardians Vol. 3 to be able to reach $100 million to $120 million for this opening weekend, which would have to overtake The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That would cause Guardians Vol. 3 to have a similar opening as the first film in the franchise with $94 million and the second film with $146 million. Regarding its comparison to a recent Marvel film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania previews were the same as Guardians Vol. 3 previews with $17.5 million. Quantumania also had a successful opening weekend with $106 million but quickly began to do poorly because of bad reviews.
Regardless of how excellent the film is, its existence is bittersweet, given that this will be the last time the cast and creators will work together on this franchise. Gunn has already begun work at DC as the new co-chairman and is said to be already writing a new Superman adaptation.
After the film’s previews and Friday’s earnings the total resulted in $48.2 million. Additionally, Saturday’s earnings were estimated to be $38.8 million, which leave the current total for Guardians Vol. 3 to $114 million.
Update:
As of May 8th, Guardians Vol. 3 has reached $118 million.
