Back in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn expressed an interest in creating a Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special, and now it looks like he’ll finally get his Christmas wish. Gunn will write and direct The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will land on Disney+ during the 2022 holiday season. The special is set to be shot during the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is scheduled to release in 2023.
It’s unclear exactly what the special will look like, but when Gunn talked about the idea back in 2017, he mentioned the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. In a tweet from 2017 after expressing interest in a Guardians holiday special, he said “I LOVED the Star Wars Holiday special as a kid. It’d be fun to do one the way I remember it as opposed to the way it actually is.”
The special was announced during Disney’s ‘Investor Day 2020’ live stream, where the company made a multitude of large announcements. Some of the Guardians will also be seen in a new series of shorts called I am Groot, which will feature Groot and new characters from around the Marvel Universe.
