James Gunn to Pen and Possibly Direct ‘Suicide Squad 2’

Ex Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is ready to return to the scene–this time in the DC universe.

After his severance from the Marvel Universe following the rise of old, controversial tweets from Gunn’s social media accounts, insiders revealed to The Wrap that Gunn is in talks of writing the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise and may even direct. With this authority, Gunn is ready to take on an entirely new story with the film where DC villains are assigned to corrupt missions much too unscrupulous for the conventional DC heroes.

Suicide Squad, the initial film in the franchise, earned $750 million worldwide despite its underwhelming reviews and heightened criticism. The cast united some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Jared Leto as the Joker. It was directed by David Ayer who also directed Brad Pitt’s Fury. Ayer, who previously had a dispute with the crew of Suicide Squad, was never expected to return to the franchise and has commented that Gunn will be “the right man for the franchise.”

Chuck Roven is set to produce the untitled sequel of the Suicide Squad franchise and Warner Bros. will most likely distribute the film again. Many fans are excited to hear of a new perspective in portraying super villains in the DC universe, especially through the lens of a past Marvel leader.

Supporters are already stepping on board for Gunn’s DC hiring. Dave Bautista, from Guardians of the Galaxy, was quite vocal in support of James Gunn when his firing from GotG3 was announced. When the news broke of Suicide Squad 2, he was speedy to stand behind the choice and even offer his own services for the film:
