James Gunn has revealed details for the Superman sequel and teased major developments for the DC Universe. Gunn recently announced Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to his Superman film. The project is set to star David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult as his arch nemesis, Lex Luthor, and is set to fly into theaters on July 9th, 2027.
Gunn, Corenswet, and Hoult all shared different artworks of the hero/villain duo in connection with the sequel announcement. Gunn recently shared some details about what the duo will end up facing in the film.
On The Howard Stern Show, Gunn revealed that Superman and Lex Luthor will have to team up against a villain in Man of Tomorrow. “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he shared on the show.
The “much bigger threat” could hint at a DC villain making their DCU debut, and points toward a couple more likely villains. Gunn also shared that Man of Tomorrow will begin filming around April 2026.
At the end of Superman, Clark senses that there’s some good in Lex, so them working together is not an impossible scenario. Additionally, Lex needs public opinion back on his side, and working with Superman would definitely help with that.
Gunn’s villain tease could point to characters such as Brainiac, Mongul, or Darkseid. It’s most likely that Gunn was hinting toward Brainiac, as what appeared to be concept art for his design appeared in the Adventures in the Making of Superman featurette.
