After a period in limbo, it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is moving ahead now that Marvel has reinstated James Gunn as the director. Gunn was removed from the project last year after some of his tweets using rape and pedophilia as punchlines resurfaced. The response was immediate, from both condemners and supporters. The main cast of Guardians then signed a letter supporting his return and vouching for his good character.
Until now, not much news has been released regarding who would write or direct the film, but now that Gunn has been brought back, it looks like the film can move back into progress and he will be directing the script he has written.
Though the tweets Gunn posted were indeed thoroughly problematic, sources say that he owned up to his own mistakes and admitted to past character flaws during his phase of trying to be a provocateur. No reports have said that he did any of the acts that he described in his tweets, as he says that he made poor choice in only words, not actions. The tweets were exposed by Fox News, apparently in retribution for his vocal criticism of Donald Trump.
So far, the fan response has been mixed. Some have been supporting him since the beginning, as he built up a considerable fan following after directing the first 2 installments of Guardians. Others are very unhappy and discussions will likely be heated as the news continues to get around.
Below is Gunn’s statement regarding the announcement that he posted earlier today on Instagram.
