James Gunn Gives Update On ‘The Batman’ Sequel Script

According to DC Studio co-head James Gunn, The Batman 2 is currently in the scripting stages and will be done as soon as Matt Reeves confirms it. The update came from a Threads Q&A hosted by Gunn according to Comicbook where fans asked, “Is the script for The Batman Part 2 still being worked on?” To which Gunn answered with a yes. A later question asked when Gunn thought the script would be ready, to which he responded, “Whenever Matt thinks it’s ready!”

At this time, no story details have been released though it is known that The Batman spinoff series Penguin will begin right after the end of the last movie. How the sequel goes will depend on what happens in that series. However, we know that the second movie will follow Batman as he tries to protect Gotham as it deals with the state the city was left in at the end of the last film.

There were original reports that filming for The Batman 2 would have started in March of 2024, but the WGA writer strike caused a delay in progress. Warner Bros. has delayed the release date from Oct. 3, 2025, to Oct. 2, 2026, meaning production should start sometime in 2025.
