James Gunn Defends The 5 Year Gap For ‘The Batman’ Sequel

Warner Bros. announced that the release date for The Batman sequel will be pushed back a year to Oct. 1, 2027 and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn defended the decision, calling the 5 year gap “fairly common in sequels.”

Gunn took to Instagram Threads explaining the push-back of Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman, saying it’s due to writing-related reasons. “Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script,” he wrote. “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”

The Batman sequel, which is currently untitled but previously called The Batman: Part II, is expected to go into production in the late summer of 2025, as mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter

While disappointing to hear for anticipating fans, Gunn mentioned that the large gap of time in between films of most big-budget titles is nothing we haven’t seen before. “7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3,” said Gunn.

Although many wish the sequel was coming sooner, one thing we can expect to see is Robert Pattinson returning as the pivotal role of the masked vigilante, Batman.
