Up, up and away!
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced today that his next film, now titled Superman, has begun filming. In an Instagram post, Gunn revealed that the film, which had been titled Superman: Legacy through the scripting stage, has been officially retitled to the simple, iconic Superman, the first film of that title since 1979’s Superman starring the late Christopher Reeve. The movie began filming today, February 29th (Leap Day), which is coincidentally the in-universe birthday of the Man of Steel.

The image shows a zoomed-in version of the Man of Steel’s iconic symbol. While at first, this image may not look like it reveals much, it promises much about the direction of the film. The symbol resembles the way Superman was depicted in Mark Waid and Alex Ross’ 1996 epic comic Kingdom Come. That version of the symbol manages to look a little less like the letter “S” while still maintaining the iconic look. Superman looks to use the classic red-and-gold coloring as opposed to Kingdom Come’s red-and-black. Kingdom Come reflected that color choice by depicting an older, more jaded hero. James Gunn’s Superman, conversely, hopes to bring the character back to his hopeful roots.
Additionally, the fringes of the image show that Superman is surrounded by snow, perhaps teasing the appearance of his iconic Fortress of Solitude, which is located in the Arctic. It is hard to say definitively if the Fortress will appear, however, since Gunn and DC Studios have been keeping any plot details close to their chests.
Gunn’s post reads “Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday. When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”
Superman, written and directed by James Gunn stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Roachel Brosnahan as intrepid reporter Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Superman’s most iconic foe, Lex Luthor. Superman is set to release on July 25, 2025.
