According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has recruited screenwriter James Coyne (Vikingdom, Puncture Wounds) to do rewrite of Sherlock Holmes 3. Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and Lionel Wigram (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) worked on previous versions of the screenplay.
The new installment in the franchise will see stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, along with the return of director Guy Ritchie (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.). Academy Award nominated actress Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), who played Holmes’ love interest Irene Adler, is also rumored to return. Ritchie/Wigram Productions, Team Downey, Silver Pictures, Dan Lin and Warner Bros are producing.
The first in the series, Sherlock Holmes, bowed in 2009 and took in $209 million domestically and $524 million worldwide. 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows outdid the first, grossing $186.8 million domestically and hauling in $545.4 million worldwide.
Coyne penned last year’s Black List script Treasure Island for Wigram and Warner Bros.
