James Cameron Missing LA Premier Of ‘Avatar’ Sequel After Catching Covid

The Los Angeles premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water will be one person short tonight. Director James Cameron, known for mega-successes AliensThe AbyssTrue Lies, and Piranha II: The Spawning, had to cancel his appearance at the premiere due to catching covid.

“I am in LA, just back from Tokyo, and I managed to pick up Covid on the plane, so I’m isolated and can’t go to my own premiere tonight,” Cameron explained to Deadline. “The number of people I’ve told over the years, ‘ah, we’ll catch up and I’ll see you at the premiere…well, I guess not. Man proposes, and God disposes.”

A representative from Disney clarified how Cameron was feeling. “James Cameron has Covid, but is feeling fine.” However, they continued, “He tested positive as part of a routine testing cadence.” The statement also outlined how he will participate for the foreseeable future: “He will continue to complete his schedule virtually but will not be at the premiere.”

The film stars will attend The Way of Water’s premier, including Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Sam Worthington. Also in attendance at the premier will be the newly reinstated CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, who took over from previous CEO Bob Chapek in November.
