James Cameron Brings Back Main Characters for the Next Three ‘Avatar’ Sequels

It’s official! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will be reprising their roles for each of the next three Avatar sequels. Stephen Lang has already been confirmed to join the cast in Avatar 2, though fans are unsure about how they will bring him back to life as his character, Colonel Miles Quaritch, dies in Avatar.

Meanwhile, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana’s characters, Jake Sully and Neytiri, are rumored to have kids, though there has not been any other information about Pandora. For a brief recap, Avatar is the story about a young paraplegic ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who replaces his deceased twin brother in a mission to retrieve unobtanium on a foreign moon named Pandora. However, the air is poisonous to humans so they have created biological copies of the indigenous Na’vi which are “piloted” by a Matrix-style neural linkup in order to move around Pandora. In addition, mining unobtanium puts the Na’vi in danger and Jake soon joins them in protecting the forests.

Director James Cameron has stated that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana represent Jake Sully and Neytiri perfectly and that he is pleased that they will continue to stay for all three sequels. Sigourney Weaver has also signed onto this project, though it is unsure if she will stay for all three sequels.

Currently, Cameron is in the process of writing the screenplays for the next three sequels with the help of Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno. These sequels will then consequently be shot back to back to back. Jon Landau is also helping to produce the next three sequels, with James Horner rumored to be in charge of the movie soundtrack.

Though unsure the official release dates of Avatar 2, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 as they are still in pre-production, reports say that Avatar 2 will come out on December 2016, with the subsequent films coming out the same time each of the next two years. The official titles of these sequels have yet to be announced.
