Director James Cameron, known for Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009) has voiced his opinion about wanting to see more female directors for superhero movies.
In an interview with Time, Cameron admitted that he related to Thanos, thinking his snapping of half the world’s population was a “viable solution.” In this interview, Cameron also acknowledged his previous comments regarding the Patty Jenkins-directed film Wonder Woman (2017).
“All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood’s been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguiding,” Cameron said back when the film was released. “She’s an objectified icon, and it’s just male Hollywood doing the same old thing!” (Via ComicBook.com)
Now Cameron is backtracking these comments.
“I don’t have an issue with Wonder Woman. I loved the movie.” Cameron said. “What was elusive to me at the moment was it’s OK if the woman wants to be beautiful and dress well not for the male gaze, but for her own gaze in the mirror, right? I had maybe missed that part of it at the time… You know, life is about stumbling and people push back and we all talk about it and things get better.”
Cameron commended former wife Kathryn Bigelow and director of Point Blank (1991) for the male-leaded films she directed.
“She (Bigelow) would have turned down any superhero movie she was offered if it was a female lead.” Cameron said. “Why not have women direct male characters? Have a woman direct Batman. Now, you’re talking.”
Lauren Montogomery co-directed the direct-to-DVD animated Batman: Year One alongside Sam Liu in 2011.
