Watch the First Trailer for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Boxing Drama ‘Southpaw’

Jake Gyllenhaal’s physical transformation—going from an emaciated frame for Nightcrawler to a bulked-up physique for his latest role as boxer Billy Hope—has dominated the headlines for Southpaw up until now. Audiences can finally see his new body in action in the film’s first official trailer, which was dropped by Eminem, whose new song is featured in the movie.

Directed by Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua, the story follows boxer Billy “The Great” Hope, who finds success in the boxing ring while his family life crumbles around him (the trailer manages to tell almost the entire plot in two and a half minutes). Written by Kurt Sutter, creator of the FX series Sons of Anarchy, the released footage embodies all of the gritty elements present within that show as well as in Fuqua’s body of work.

Also starring Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris), 50 Cent (Las Vegas), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Naomie Harris (28 Days Later), and Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey), Southpaw is slated for release on July 31.
