Amy Adams (Big Eyes) and Jake Gyllenhall (Nightcrawler) are reportedly in talks to star in Tom Ford’s newest movie, Nocturnal Animals, according to Variety. The project was recently announced as a partnership between Ford and George Clooney, with the former directing and the latter producing.
An adaptation of the Austin Wright novel, Tony and Susan, the film tells the story of a woman, Susan, who discovers a manuscript for an unfinished novel by her ex-husband entitled Nocturnal Animals. Reading the manuscript forces Susan to reconcile her marriage and confront some dark truths about herself.
Adams is reportedly interested in the role of Susan while Gyllenhaal is in talks to play her ex-husband, Tony. This leaves the question as to whether Clooney will have a role in the project or simply remain behind the camera as a producer. The script drew a lot of attention from top tier actors. With five Oscar nominations but no wins for Adams, she likely hopes this will finally allow her to walk home with a statue. Gyllenhaal’s acclaimed performance in last year’s Nightcrawler made him a dark horse for an Academy Awards nomination which ultimately failed to materialize, but nonetheless raised his stock as an elite dramatic actor.
In the meantime, Gyllenhaal will star as a boxer in Southpaw, for which he underwent quite the physical transformation. He was rumored to replace Tom Hardy in Suicide Squad but the role went to Joel Kinnaman. Adams will return as Lois Lane in the Batman vs. Superman Dawn of Justice. She also is pre-production on the sci-fi adventure, Story of Your Life.
