According to a report from Variety, Paramount and Skydance Productions have offered Jai Courtney the role of Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genesis, the upcoming reboot to the Terminator franchise. Should Courtney accept the role, he will join Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke as John Connor, and Arnold Schwarzenegger possibly reprising his iconic role as the T-800. Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) will direct the screenplay from Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier.
In 1984’s The Terminator, Kyle Reese was a soldier in the human resistance sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor from a robot sent to kill her before the birth of her son John. Despite coming from the future, Kyle quickly began a relationship with Sarah and was revealed to be John’s father. Skydance has not indicated how closely the reboot will follow the original plot, though the presence of Jason Clarke as John Connor could indicate some significant changes. The events of the 1984 film occurred before John’s birth so Genesis could take place at another time in the Connors’ lives or involve more time travelling than before.
Courtney will appear in the upcoming Divergent scheduled to release on March 21. Terminator: Genesis will reach theaters on July 1, 2015 as the start of a new planned trilogy. Skydance also has a spin-off TV series planned that will involve some of the creative team from the new films.
