Pablo Larrain is looking to start his next project with Annapurna Pictures and their adaptation of Anand Giridharada’s nonfiction novel The True American, according to Deadline. After directing the Oscar-nominated Jackie last year, as well as the Chilean biopic Neruda, Larrain is fast-becoming a major industry auteur.
The True American already has Tom Hardy attached to take a starring role. The film will tell the true story of Rais Bhuiyan, a Bangladeshi immigrant and Dallas-area convenience store employee, living in Texas closely after 9/11. After narrowly surviving an attack that took the lives of two other immigrants, Bhuiyan works to have his attacker, the self named “Arab slayer” Mark Stroman, spared from execution.
This film has been in the pipeline for some time now, with Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) once attached to direct. Bigelow has now moved her involvement over to executive producer. She will be backing the film alongside Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, Matthew Budman, and Juan de Dios Larrain.
Larrain’s Jackie was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Actress (Natalie Portman), Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score. Neruda, while not making the cut for the Oscars, was in the Best Foreign Film contention throughout awards’ season and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Previously, Larrain’s No was nominated for the Best Foreign Oscar at the 2013 ceremony.
