Jack Black Makes First Appearance As Steve In ‘A Minecraft Movie’

Jack Black as "Steve"

Following an initial announcement over a decade ago, the first teaser for a film based around the Minecraft IP has officially been released on the Warner Bros. YouTube channel, featuring Jack Black as the iconic character of “Steve.” The project, titled A Minecraft Movie, will be released on April 4th, 2025.

The trailer opens on a portal transporting a group of characters led by Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (played by Jason Momoa) into the world of the voxel-based sandbox survival universe of Minecraft. Alongside Momoa are Emma Myers, known for her role in Wednesday as Enid Sinclair, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), and Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy, Lisey’s Story).

After they become trapped in the game, the group must traverse the world to build their strength, defeat enemies, and discover a way out. The teaser features a wide range of items and creatures from the source material. Piglins, a denizen of the Hades-like dimension known as the nether, appear in droves, piloting ghast balloons and threatening the safety of villages. A creeper, Minecraft’s explosive green villain, stalks Momoa in one of the clips featured. Additionally, large medieval structures populate the world, showing signs of player-based input.

Atop one of these castles, the group is introduced to Steve, played by Jack Black. “Steve” is the name given to the player character in Minecraft, and Black adorns the iconic cyan-blue shirt to match. Steve’s role in the game is simple: survive. It appears that Steve will act as a guide to the main group, helping them adapt and survive the harsh conditions of the game world to find a way out.

The film’s director, Jared Hess, is known for comedies such as Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. The latter, a semi-biographical wrestling comedy, also features Jack Black as lead. A Minecraft Movie‘s creative team sports a renowned crew, including Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Dan Lemmo (The Batman) and director of photography Enrique Chediak (127 Hours).
