Jack Black and Jason Momoa Explain Why They Think ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Is What The World Needs Right Now

During the premiere of A Minecraft Movie, based on the popular video game Minecraft, stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa were interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, along with the rest of the cast and crew. The film follows a group of characters teaming up after a mysterious portal thrusts them all into the world of Minecraft, who then have to find a way to adapt to the strange quirks and rules of the Minecraft world and find a way to get home.

In his interview, Jack Black, who plays Minecraft’s iconic protagonist, Steve, explained why he thinks A Minecraft movie is what the world needs right now. He began by jokingly quoting the beginning lyrics of Burt Bacharach’s 1965 song “What the World Needs Now” “What the world needs now is love, sweet love”. He goes on to explain, saying: “We’ve got to work together, my God. There’s so much violence and war and hatred. And that’s what I love about this movie — there’s a lot of love in it and there’s a lot of creativity. There is some anger and violence too, but in the end it’s about friendship and working together to make [the world] a better place.”

Jason Momoa, who stars in the film as a Garrett Garrison, one of the characters thrust into the Minecraft world, who as a child, was a master of competitive video games, was also interviewed, and he shared many of Jack Black’s sediments. “I think everyone needs to escape a little bit right now,” says Momoa. “It’s nice to sit back and have a really fun adventure and giggle and laugh” He goes on to make a joking statement about Jack Black. “I never want to do another film [with him]. It was absolutely shit. He’s a fake, he’s a fraud … No, I mean he’s beyond what you want him to be.”

Momoa was also asked if he has any promises to make about the film for Minecraft fans. “We won’t let you down. We worked our ass off for you, and I think we brought the world to life. I think everybody’s gonna love it.”, he answered, while also explaining his hopes for a sequel. “There’s so much more to tell; I just hope the fans will be delighted and let us make more,” says Momoa.

A Minecraft Movie is directed by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess. The film will release nationwide in standard format, Imax, and other large formats on April 4th.
