J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is set to produce the newest live-action film from Warner Bros. and Mattel Films, Hot Wheels. The film is now in the works as the companies announced their partnership this week. Hot Wheels is the 54-year-old brand from Mattel that surrounds toy cars and is billed as the world’s leading vehicle franchise.
The brand represents and unites all segments of car culture, the upcoming film based on the beloved IP is described as a high-stakes action film, which will showcase some of the brand’s hottest and sleekest cars, motorcycles, and monster trucks.
Hot Wheels is the number 1 best-selling toy in the world, according to The NPD/Retail Tracking Service, with over one billion vehicles sold. The brand has also had its stakes in the influencing of automotive and pop culture trends with collaborations with global leaders in automotive, streetwear, fashion, luxury, entertainment, gaming, action sports, and motorsports.
Vice President Kevin McKeon and Creative Exec Andrew Scannell will lead the project for Mattel. VP Production Peter Dodd will lead exec for Warner Bros. President of Motion Pictures, Hannah Minghella will oversee the Bad Robot production alongside Jon Cohen.
The two companies have recently also partnered up for director Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film, Barbie, which will release in 2023.
