A sequel to the 1986 smash Top Gun has been speculated and rumored for years. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer took to Twitter to reinvigorate hope that follow-up may be under discussion with Tom Cruise back to reprise his iconic speed-needing Maverick.
Reignited speculation for a return to the Top Gun world makes a certain degree of sense given our cinematic climate at the moment. This past year alone saw successful reboots/sequels from long-standing (or long dormant) film franchises including Mad Max, Rocky, Jurassic Park and of, course Star Wars. All four of those recent examples proved commercial successes and in the case of Mad Max: Fury Road, a critically acclaimed action yarn for the ages.
Bruckheimer has been teasing a second installment of Top Gun for some time now. As recently as last November, Val Kilmer (who portrayed Iceman in the original film) stated he was offered a role in the sequel. While there’s no official confirmation on casting, a potential director or a roundabout start date, most parties seem aligned to join the fray if it can be worked out. Cruise, who last appeared on screen in Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation does have busy schedule ahead of him: he will next appear in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, a sequel to his 2012 thriller. Cruise also has Mena and Lunar Park planned, both of which would reunite the actor with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman as well as the proposed starring part in Universal’s reboot of The Mummy franchise.
The original Top Gun opened in 1986 and quickly became a global smash earning upwards of $350 million worldwide. The film was also nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one for its iconic tune “Take My Breath Away.”
