Christopher Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi epic, Interstellar, has reached success on the 10th anniversary of IMAX re-releases. The film grossed $3.5 million at the domestic box office and $3.75 million globally this past weekend and will now make the tenth day of domestic re-released, which has totaled $10.8 million. This has made Interstellar the highest-grossing IMAX re-release of all time by having an overall total of $17.4 million this year.
This re-release has generated $132.3 million, making it the eighth-grossing IMAX release ever. The release of Interstellar is now becoming a demand for public viewing. According to Collider, this demand has Paramount and IMAX expanding the domestic IMAX screening court to 320 to accommodate audiences according to Collider.
The appeal and audience demand for the movie Interstellar have created an immersive cinematic experience. This success highlights the viability of releasing classic films in a better format because it offers not just the nostalgic feel of the movie but also a captivating experience for moviegoers.
Other IMAX re-released has not grossed as well as this movie had. One example of this is the movie Kraven. The Hunter got about $1.7 million globally with a domestic opening of $518,000, according to Collider.
IMAX currently has a lineup that has many moviegoers excited. This lineup includes Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Bary Jenkins, which is supposed to be playing on 1,656 IMAX screens in 85 markets, according to Collider. Many Chinese audiences will be able to see Jason Zhang’s Brilliance Tour, a concert film, debut playing on 768 IMAX screens starting in December.
This performance of Interstellar re-release cements the status as a modern classic but also reveals the enduring attraction of IMAX viewing due to the ability to deliver good quality cinematic experiences.
