Sony is slating many fascinating projects for the next few years, including the recently announced Men in Black–Jump Street crossover, Bad Boys 3 and the adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Dark Tower. But one of their biggest releases of 2016 is the third installment in Ron Howard’s Robert Langdon trilogy, Inferno. Howard has directed the past two films, along with Tom Hanks starring as Langdon. The partnership is back together again for the third film, which gives Langdon a decision that could change the fate of the world.
Both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons put Langdon against seemingly impossible odds as he discovered some very dark parts of history, not fully realizing just what it may do to the modern world if they were brought out once again. And by what we can glimmer from the teaser for Inferno, it’s at least somewhat similar in tone. Langdon is giving a device that, if pressed, would wipe out half of the world’s population. But if he decides not to do that, in 100 years time the human race will be completely obliterated.
It says at the end of the teaser that a full trailer will be coming tomorrow, which should give us some more detail about what Langdon is really up against. Hanks stars alongside Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), although the current footage doesn’t show too much about her role in the story. And unlike the past two films, hopefully Inferno will gain both financial and critical success when it hits theaters this fall.
Inferno opens on October 28.
