The recently released movie Hanu Man is expected to get 100 more screening locations across North America starting January 18. Currently distributed by Nirvana Cinemas, Hanu Man is projected to gross $3 million over this MLK weekend.
According to Variety, the Indian superhero film had its opening weekend in 430 locations in North America and grossed $2.3 million at the time of the article. On Comscore, the global media analytic company where Variety got the total, it is now at $2.86 million according to the domestic box office ranking.
The film was directed and written by Prasanth Varma, known for films such as Awe! (2018) and Zombie Reddy (2021). This newest film will be the first of a cinematic universe of his creation and has a sequel titled Jai Hanuman planned for 2025.
Responding to Variety, Varma said that seeing all the love and support for his film is overwhelming, and he is humbled by all those supporting it.
“This is possible only because of the audience. This is their success,” Varma said.
Hanu Man takes place in the fictional village of Anjanadri, following a man named Hanumanthu, played by Teja Sajja, who receives the power of the Hindu god Hanuman after an accident at sea.
The film was made with an estimated $2.5 million budget and has already made a profit, grossing $6 million in India alone. Nirvana’s Sundeep Yerramreddy told Variety that the film’s current success could help it gross $6 to $7 million in North America.
