IFC Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Kelly Reichardt’s latest film Certain Women. The film stars Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), Laura Dern (Wild) and Kristen Stewart (Clouds of Sils Maria) and recently premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The drama is one of the last of the major Sundance titles to receive a pick-up. Reichardt both wrote and directed the title.
Based on Maile Meloy’s collection of short stories, Certain Women chronicles a group of intersecting stories concerning women living across Montana. Dern portrays a lawyer attempting to calm a disgruntled client, Williams and James LeGros (Zodiac) play a married couple in a rough patch while Stewart portrays a passer-by who develops a rapport with a local ranch hand (Lily Gladstone, Jimmy P.). The film was produced by Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino and Anish Savjani while Carol director Todd Haynes serves as an executive producer. Jonathan Sehring, president of IFC Films stated:
The entire team at IFC Films have long been fans of Kelly and are thrilled to finally be working with her — she is a master at her craft and one of the most distinct storytellers working in cinema today. Along with her amazing cast of Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Lily Gladstone and Michelle Williams, Kelly has created another treasure that confirms her as one of our great American filmmakers. We can’t wait to bring it to the theaters for audiences to see.
While Reichardt’s films tend to stay in the art-house sphere, she has made several critically beloved independent movies throughout the years including the thriller Night Moves (2013) with Jesse Eisenberg and Dakota Fanning, the western Meek’s Cutoff (2011) and the 2008 drama Wendy and Lucy. The latter two both starred Williams.
