Idris Elba (Pacific Rim) is in talks to join the next film in the Star Trek franchise. The actor is reportedly up for the role of one of the villains, though specifics are still under wraps.
Along with Elba’s role, the plot is also being kept secret, though we do know that Scottie himself, Simon Pegg, is co-writing the script with Doug Jung (Confidence). Justin Lin (Fast Five) is directing after the writer of the previous two films, Robert Orci, vacated the director’s chair. Orci and J.J. Abrams are still on board as producers, despite Abrams’ involvement in the upcoming Star Wars film. The full crew of the Enterprise is expected to return.
Elba has worked in science-fiction before, as the blue-collar pilot, Janek, in Prometheus, Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim, and as the Asgardian sentry Heimdall in the Thor franchise. He can currently be seen in The Gunman, and will also star in the upcoming Netflix release, Beasts of No Nation.
Star Trek 3 is set for release in 2016, most likely – based on the previous two films – in the early summer.
