2014’s John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves (47 Ronin) as the titular hitman who comes out of retirement for revenge, was a surprise hit at the theaters with a global box office reaching over $78 million.
What isn’t a surprise is that a sequel is in the making with Keanu Reeves back in John Wick 2. Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the first feature with fellow veteran stunt coordinator David Leitch in their directorial debuts, helms again. Also returning, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is Emmy nominee and Golden Globe-winner Ian McShane (Hercules), reprising his role as the owner of The Continental, a well-regulated swanky boutique hotel for assassins.
Musician-turned-actor Common (Run All Night) has also just been announced as a new villain in the Lionsgate sequel. Further plot details have not yet been released, however, we do know that the film will be shooting in New York and Italy.
McShane, as comfortable on the small screen (Deadwood, Kings, Pillars of the Earth, American Horror Story, Ray Donovan) as on the big screen, has completed an episode for HBO’s Game of Thrones and will star as a violent sheriff in Gonzalo López-Gallego’s gritty drama, Hollow Point. He will be seen next as a corrupt judge in writer-director Dan Pritzker’s Bolden!, a mythical account of the life of an early 20th century jazz artist who was later sidelined by mental illness. The film bows on November 11.
We will have more on John Wick 2 as information surfaces.
