Hunter Schafer, one of the Euphoria television series breakout stars, makes her first foray into the horror genre with Cuckoo, which lands on Hulu on December 17.
Set against the eerie backdrop of the German Alps, Cuckoo follows Gretchen (Schafer), a teenager grappling with the loss of her mother. Her life takes a turn when her father, Luis (Marton Csokas), relocates them to a remote resort where he’s taken a new job. Despite the beautiful surroundings, Gretchen begins to sense that something is wrong—especially with the enigmatic owner of the property, Herr König (Dan Stevens). As secrets unravel, the film builds a chilling narrative that blends psychological tension with supernatural horror.
The cast is rounded out by a stellar lineup, including Jessica Henwick from The Matrix Resurrections (2021), Jan Bluthardt (Luz), Greta Fernández (A Thief’s Daughter), and Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). Directed by Tilmann Singer, whose 2018 feature Luz showcased his talent for crafting eerie atmospheres, Cuckoo cements his reputation as a rising voice in the horror genre.
Neon, the production company behind Cuckoo, had a big year, also producing Immaculate and Longlegs, both of which impressed horror audiences, and Anora. Looking ahead, Neon is primed to continue its winning streak with projects like Oz Perkins’ The Monkey and Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck.
With Hunter Schafer stepping into a new genre and Tilmann Singer’s visionary direction, Cuckoo is one chilling tale you won’t want to miss.
