DreamWorks’s first foray into the live-action adaptations of its beloved animated feature films has soared to new heights with a franchise best of $84 million for its domestic opening weekend. According to numbers calculated by the Hollywood Reporter, How to Train Your Dragon is the seventh-biggest at the worldwide box office, the eighth-biggest domestically, and the sixth-biggest internationally for live-action adaptations of animated films. On top of incredibly positive audience and critic reviews, How to Train Your Dragon is also flourishing overseas, with Mexico in particular contributing $14 million to its additional $114 million of its International release.
Disney holds on to the top three with Lilo and Stitch Landing in second with $16 million for its fourth weekend. Much like How to Train Your Dragon, much of its success is attributed to the nostalgia kick, with both films commanding audiences of mostly preteen to young adult demographics. Third was an A24 premiere of Materialists from newcomer Celine Song, boasting one of the few International releases for the indie film studio. Bringing in $12 million, Materialists is another solid opening with its place in third, rounding out the top three.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning takes fourth over From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Final Reckoning at $10 million helped it sneak by Ballerina‘s $9.4 million in its second week, continuing to fall behind initial estimates.
Karate Kid: Legends continues to fall flat on its face with only $5 million for its third weekend, completely cementing the film into bomb territory with its sixth-place finish.
Lucky Number 7 for this week went to Final Destinations Bloodlines with a modest and respectable $3.9 million for its 5th week, continuing its run as the most popular of the horror films to hit theaters this year.
In eighth place from Wes Anderson is The Phoenician Scheme with $3.1 million for its third week. In a surprising turn of events and much to the joy of NEON, The Life Of Chuck crawls out of the lower 20 into 9th place for its second week, seeing an 855% increase in box office revenue.
