John Cameron Mitchell’s (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rabbit Hole) How To Talk To Girls At Parties first trailer has been released, and it is a wild ride of science fiction and rock and roll from start to finish.
We’re immediately placed in Croydon, London in the year 1977, a time and place famously known for its punk rockers and anarchists, and it’s very clear that is exactly who we’ll be following throughout the film (well, them and the strange alien cult they find). Three punk boys, including Enn (Alex Sharp), stumble their way to a party on a drunken night in hopes of finding a few girls to have some fun with. When they arrive, the ladies are much different than expected. There are extra fingers, latex suits, and strange “sex rituals” everywhere to be seen.
Enn finds a moment of peace with Zan (Ella Fanning), a charmingly naive and rebellious alien who wants to experience what being human and alive is like. The rest of the film follows the romantic adventures of Enn and Zan in hopes to taking Zan “to the punk.” The plot of the film seems to loom over ideas of individuality versus conformity as well as love conquering endless boundaries.
Although the reviews thus far out of Cannes have been a bit on the negative side, we are still interested in how this film will do after its release, especially after A24 decided to pick it up at the festival.
The film will hit theaters on May 18. See the trailer and one-sheet below.
