Horror Rules The Box Office This Weekend With ‘Backrooms’ Debut And ‘Obsession’s’ Continued Success

It’s looking to be a horror-filled weekend at the box office. While audiences still remained obsessed with Obsession, A24’s Backrooms makes its long awaited debut this weekend, and has already opened to major numbers.

Coming from director Kane Parsons, Backrooms is based on the internet phenomenon under the same name, that blends horror with liminal space. With Parsons working alongside A24 on the project, this marks one of the youngest directors to work on a major film, with Parsons being just 20 years old. This is the first feature film he’s directed, but he made his following when he crafted an entire analog-horror Backrooms series on YouTube, which helped popularize the concept even more.

To say that Backrooms is a hit would be an understatement. The film crushed the competition on its first Friday alone, raking in a whopping $38 million. Hollywood Reporter notes that it’s currently on track to hit upwards of $90 million over the weekend, which would make it the biggest opening thus far for an A24 film.

WBAL TV even got to sit down with leading talent Chiwetel Ejiofer about what it was like filming in locations that evoke the idea of liminal space, something that’s captivated the attention of many people on the internet. He commented on filming with those sets, describing it as “out there.” He also went on to admire the full commitment to what they did, and the choice to lean into the aesthetic that made this a sensation in the first place.

Hollywood Reporter noted that Backrooms isn’t the only huge horror hit in theaters right now. The aforementioned Obsession is still doing major numbers, and is looking to take home about $29 million at the end of the weekend, up from the $24 million cume last weekend.
