After a small local rise in COVID-19 cases, the Hong Kong government has decided to once again close a number of establishments, including gyms, movie theaters, and amusement parks like Disneyland, per Deadline. Hong Kong Disneyland announced that the park itself would be “temporarily closed,” while Disneyland hotels would stay open. The park had not even been operating for a month since its June 18 reopening.
Despite implementing crowd-limitation restrictions and various other virus prevention measures, places like these will be shutting down in an attempt to further mitigate or nullify any growing spread of the virus. Hong Kong has done relatively well in handling the coronavirus pandemic, with strict lockdown rules being implemented in January.
This news comes soon after Disney World in Orlando announced in a since-deleted video that they will be reopening, despite Florida recently breaking the highest number of single-day positive COVID-19 cases of any state so far. Naturally, the announcement was followed with a great deal of criticism. As of the time this article was being written, Florida has 282, 435 coronavirus cases, with Orange County, where Orlando is, having over 18,000 positive cases.
Hong Kong theaters will be greatly affected by these closings, and again are proving themselves to be among the last public places that can be safely opened amid a pandemic.
