Fast and the Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, the latest anticipated entry in the Fast and Furious franchise, sadly has not performed as well as expected. According to Screen Rant, Hobbs & Shaw had the lowest debut since 2009’s Fast & Furious with a domestic opening of only $60.8 million and a worldwide total of $180.8 million. Despite having big-name stars like Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba, Hobbs & Shaw has not managed to earn back its $200 million budget quite yet.
For the past 10 years, Fast & Furious movies have consistently been able to rake in the big bucks. A quick glance at Box Office Mojo reveals that the previous movies managed to earn hundreds of millions during their release. Though Hobbs & Shaw won the top slot this weekend at theaters and hasn’t flopped the same way many other summer releases have in 2019, it’s $60 million opening still marks a low point for the franchise.
Despiteitspoor box office performance, Hobbs & Shaw received decent to positive reviews, with most critics praising the buddy dynamic between Johnson and Statham and its over the top, 80’s action movie-level set pieces. So, while it’s a little early to write off Hobbs & Shaw as a complete failure, one could be safe to assume that Universal is disappointed with the results.
