Emmy winner Hiro Murai, known for his work on the popular show The Bear, has found his first feature project through A24’s Bushido.
The plot for Bushido has not been revealed but is described as an action film set in feudal Japan, focusing on samurais.
Murai is set to direct, with a screenplay by Henry Dunham. Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen will produce alongside Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb and David Hinojosa.
There has been a recent surge in popularity for samurai stories after FX’s Shōgun, which centered on samurais and their lives in 1600 Japan. The show won 18 Emmys.
A24 has a longstanding partnership with Square Peg and 2AM. A24 and Square Peg have numerous upcoming projects, including Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega’s Death of a Unicorne, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s The Drama and Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone’s Eddington.
Murai may be best known for his work with multi-faceted star Donald Glover. They worked together on the Emmy-nominated show Atlanta, Amazon Music’s film Guava Island, and most recently the Prime Video show Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Murai has also worked with Glover on his musical endeavors under his alter ego, Childish Gambino, including Grammy-winning This Is America.
Murai has received Emmy nominations for his work on Mr. and Mrs. Smith and FX’s critically acclaimed series The Bear.
