Two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) is set to star in the Australian sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, according to Variety. Television director Grant Sputore (Castaway) will direct in his feature film debut. Michael Lloyd Green wrote the script. The cast already includes Clara Rugaard (Good Favour), Luke Hawker (Krampus) and newcomer Tahlia Sturzaker.
The indie centers on a teenage girl (Rugaard) being raised underground by a single mom, except the mother in this film is a robot whose express purpose is the re-population of the earth in the event of an extinction disaster. When a stranger in distress (Swank) is taken in by the teenage girl, the family dynamics change radically. The stranger challenges Mother’s views and the teenager begins to investigate the true nature of Mother’s motives and mission.
Kelvin Munro and Timothy White are producing, and Sputore is executive producing.
Swank appeared on the big screen this summer in Logan Lucky, starring Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig. She took home two Best Actress Oscars for her starring performances in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby and Kimberly Peirce’s Boys Don’t Cry.
Southern Lights Films and Penguin Empire’s I Am Mother is currently filming.
