The Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on Sunday night and surprise turn, Hidden Figures snagged the top movie award of the evening, winning the Best Ensemble Cast prize. The film, a late-breaking hit for Fox and an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, centers around the untold stories of a group of African-American women who helped put a man in space and focuses primarily on mathematician Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Henson). In all the awards, voted on by members of SAG-AFTRA, reflected a notably diverse slate of winners and gestured heavily on our currently fraught political climate.
Aside from Hidden Figures, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis each took home prizes for their work in Fences – the duo similarly earned Tony Awards for a recent Broadway revival of famed August Wilson play a few years back. Mahershala Ali was also recognized for his acclaimed work in Moonlight. Emma Stone also won for her lead performance in the musical La La Land.
