Here’s the Trailer for ‘The Lazarus Effect’

From the same production company that brought you The Purge (and its sequels), and other horror flicks like Oculus and Sinister, now comes The Lazarus Effect. In the movie, a group of medical students find a way to bring animals, and eventually people, back from the dead, with results that turn into a nightmare straight from Hell.

Olivia Wilde plays Zoe, one of the leaders of the group that is endeavoring to bring animals back to life with the “Lazarus serum.” In the trailer, we do see that she is the most hesitant of the group, especially after they succeed in bringing a dog back from the dead (the dog, of course, shows very creepy symptoms after its return). Then, when trying to replicate the experiment, Zoe is electrocuted and Frank (Mark Duplass) is devastated enough to subject her to the Lazarus experiment.

Near the end of the trailer there is a flash of the words “John 11” just before the title card. Viewers familiar with the Bible will know that John 11 tells the story of Lazarus, the man four days dead until Jesus resurrects him (ultimately leading to the Crucifixion). Though there isn’t a clear line drawn from that biblical miracle to this medical horror, the name “Lazarus” is clearly the inspiration for the experiment of the movie, and perhaps the trailer is hinting at clues for the movie itself in that Bible chapter. Or maybe not.

The movie also stars Sarah Bolger (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Donald Glover (TV’s Community), and Evan Peters (American Horror Story), and was directed by David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi). The Lazarus Effect is scheduled for release on February 27th and is being marketed under the hashtag #EvilWillRise.
