Henry Cavill’s time as Superman has come to an abrupt end. The British star has been synonymous with the Krypton superhero since DC released Man in Steel in 2013, the studio’s first installment in their expanded universe. The new heads of DC – James Gunn and Peter Safran – have cut his cameo in the upcoming Flash movie, being released next year.
As recently as this fall, all signs pointed to him continuing to play Clark Kent. This October, he announced on Instagram that he was officially returning to DC for the next installment. But on December 14th, he returned to the social media platform to announce that he had been removed from the role. In the post, Cavill described his frustrations with the studio’s flip-flop, saying, “this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”
Gal Gadot’s vignette as Wonder Woman has also been cut. This comes after news that DC canceled the third Wonder Woman film in the Patty Jenkins franchise.
These moves come as the studio is going through massive transitions. DC trails distantly behind Marvel in market share and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery this kind of mix-up is necessary for its survival. As for Cavill, the ex-superhero said, “James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes.”
