The HBOMax streaming date for Superman (2025), the first film in James Gunn’s DC Universe, has been announced. Gunn wrote and directed the film, which starred David Corenswet in the title role. The film will be made available to stream for HBOMax subscribers on Sept. 19.
This streaming date announcement comes after the film grossed approximately $615 million at the global box office, becoming the first DC movie to accomplish this since Matt Reeves’s The Batman, released in 2022, and starring Robert Pattinson. This was a good result for Superman (2025), which had an estimated budget of around $225 million, and was also made to jump-start the new DC Universe, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
At the box office, the film outperformed many titles from the competition at Marvel Studios, such as Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, released only two weeks after Superman (2025). The film was also well-received critically, with an 83% critics’ score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. It’s been received even better by audiences, with a 90% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Upcoming titles in this new DC Universe include Supergirl, which will be released in July of next year; a Clayface movie in September of next year; and the TV series Lanterns, which is due for release on HBOMax early next year.
